What are some of the positive and negatives of
technology in education?
Wow, my first ever blog post! If I didn't have this class, let's be honest, I would have never been able to say that I have a blog. This is just something I would never do. This for sure is an example of technology in education working. I am learning and experiencing something new because of a class and an assignment. Would I have been exposed to blogging otherwise, I think not. Technology has an affect on students because it allows them to do and work on things that they might not normally get to experience, like myself. It also helps to lessen gaps in economically struggling classrooms who may not have technology at home and may not have been exposed to that knowledge or usage. Using technology in the classroom gives students the power to not only learn, but to create as well.
Given the chance, students are able to cultivate documents and presentations by not only researching their subject, but using creativity in order to present it in a unique way. There are so many ways to express yourself using technology and when students feel excited and represented, they are more open to learning.
Technology gives students the ability to use the latest tools available to them in order to learn and grow. Teachers can use videos to provoke emotions and thought in order to help the student connect to the lessons. They can use technology to better engage students who have difficulties reading or writing by using specific apps that bridge the gap for them with peers. Children are drawn towards technology, but with that technology comes a lot of lessons on being responsible and safe.
Some of biggest downfalls of technology is misuse and safety. Children who get distracted and go on sites that are not allowed on during school sticks out to me as a problem that is constantly a battle for teachers. When technology enters the classroom it brings the world to their fingertips and that world can be tempting to explore more than the lesson. This power can be difficult for young ones to understand and regulate themselves. I think teachers need to set up specific rules for technology time and monitor closely to help protect the students time and safety. Students often don't understand how careful they must be while online and that is a concern for parents and teachers alike.
Overall, just like anything in life it's about balance. Give them screen time, give them fresh air, teach them how to love an old book. Using a multitude of resources will help guide you and your students to find how they best process and retain information.

Woot congrats on your first post blog and ya know what in my eyes sometimes the sign of a good learning experience is that you try something you would have never otherwise tried so win-win in my eyes :)
ReplyDeleteSafety and distraction are two big drawbacks to tech in the classroom, so the thought that always has to go into your future planning is how to make your experiences engaging so they are not tempted.
